The 3 Phase to be a Top Team
The 3 Phase to be a Top Team

Teams that excel don’t just happen by chance. They’re cultivated through strategic and consistent Learning AND Doing, which starts with individual self-awareness, cohesive team understanding, and a commitment to continued practice and development. In this article, we’ll explore these three crucial phases and their place in forming a Top Team. Additionally, we’ll share some of our learnings from developing the impulzity Team Dynamics® program — our 90-day highly individualized learning experience designed for team transformation.

I. Self Knowledge — «Me, Myself, and I»

The journey to becoming a top team starts always at the individual level. Each team member must embark on a quest for self-knowledge — understanding their talents and rescources, work preferences, and communication styles. This phase is about introspection, self-discovery, self-awareness, recognizing one’s unique contributions to the team, but also what support one’s requires from the team to achieve the best possible results.

  1. Embracing Individuality

Successful teams are composed of individuals who not only understand themselves but also appreciate the need for diversity. Embracing individuality means recognizing that each team member brings a unique set of skills, talents, and perspectives to the table.

  1. Know the Talents and Resources | utilize them

Team members must be encouraged to conduct a thorough assessment of their talents and resources. Knowing what each member excels at and where they may need support lays the foundation for effective collaboration. This insight helps in task allocation, ensuring that each team member reaches their full potential.

  1. Communication Styles

Communication is the lifeblood of successful teams. Different people prefer different styles of communication — direct and concise or detailed and personable are just two examples. When we know how each team member responds best, we can minimize misunderstandings and foster a successful collaborative environment.

II. Team Knowledge — From «I» to «WE»

Armed with self-awareness, the team now transitions from what the individual can contribute to what the team can achieve as a unified force. This phase involves building a collective understanding of team goals, values, and how each member’s talents and resources complement the others. It’s about transforming a group of individuals into a cohesive unit.

  1. Shared Vision and Goals

Every Top Team has a shared vision and common goals. Establishing this collective purpose creates alignment among team members because when everyone understands the destination they’re trying to reach, the team moves as one in the same direction.

  1. Understanding Team Colleagues’ Resources and Talents

The prerequisite for becoming a top team is to understand what makes your team colleague tick, what talents and resources are available. This knowledge of human nature is the basis for proactively avoiding misunderstandings, supporting each other optimally, building trust among each other and mastering challenges together. This is how success and productivity will be celebrated.

  1. Synergizing Resources and Talents

The self-knowledge phase brought insights to the fore, which can now be synergized within the team. This involves strategic task allocation, ensuring that each team member’s unique abilities contribute to the overall success of the team. That way, everyone is in their element.

  1. Open Communication and Feedback

In this second phase, communication continues to be important, but it must now extend beyond individual preferences and encompass the team as a whole. Open communication channels, constructive feedback mechanisms, conflict-resolution processes, building up trust — these must all be refined to maintain healthy team dynamics.

III. Sustaining Success as a Top Team

Becoming a top team is not a one-time achievement; it’s an ongoing process. That’s why we emphasize Learning AND Doing at impulzity — it’s not enough to commit to team dynamics once, it’s a continual process to ensure that a team’s success is not just achieved, but sustained over the long term. Without a learning mindset, teams can be optimized, but inflexible in the face of challenges, for example, when collaborating with new colleagues or adapting to shifts in company structure. That’s where guided learning initiatives can add support, helping your team remain agile and resilient in the face of change.
